Good Me, Bad Me is the debut novel by Ali Land which has found a following of admirers here on Goodreads. This book is full of suspense and Ali Land who has quite a different style of writing succeeds in gripping the reader and encourages them to read just one more chapter again and again. Yes, the story can be uncomfortable in places but thankfully it’s not graphic about the child murders and the abuse they would have suffered. The question then arises- Will good win the battle over Milly’s dark proclivities or will she eventually give herself over them? To protect Annie, authorities decide to place her in a foster home and give her a new identity, ‘Milly’.

As a result, we as the reader get an in-depth insight into the human psyche of an incredibly damaged young individual. But Land takes this problematic subject matter in her stride and the result is an unputdownable narrative.Sleep continues to evade her as her mother invades her dreams turning them into nightmares, and even during waking hours she senses her presence all around her. But she is fighting on all sides with very little help or support: the sessions she has with Mike seemed pretty superficial to me and she had very little external contact or help, except for Joan, who accompanies her into court but is otherwise little present, and her art teacher, whose behaviour seems flighty at best and erratic or irresponsible at worst. After graduating from university with a degree in Mental Health, Ali spent a decade working as a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nurse in both hospitals and schools in the UK and Australia.

This book explores her life in foster care after she hands her mother to the police and how she deals with her internal conflict as to what extent she was like her mother. This young teen, who had so much to forget, had already been through so much, witnessed something beyond terrible, who now just wanted to be normal, and in a home where people cared about her in a healthy way. Milly can’t let go of her mother and she is acutely aware that her mother was grooming her to be just like herself.I can appreciate how hard it would have been to get inside the head of such a troubled young girl but Land’s characterisation should be commended for its authenticity. The book begins with this very appropriate quote by Cason McCullers: “But the hearts of small children are delicate organs. The case is getting intense media coverage where her mother is referred to as 'The Peter Pan Killer'.
