BUT, it doesn't dominate the storyline, and the solution was something I had never thought of, and really very clever. It's essential with a series of crime novels that the recurring characters are progressed in each book and that happened here. Lord Smith's love of the natural world is shown in his magnificent collection of animals and birds, most of which he shot and stuffed himself. I was also irritated by the way that the author feels the need to tell us everything that has happened in the series up until now, to the point of spoiling little twists in the previous books (like what happened to her cat in The Crossing Places).

The book's strengths are, as ever, Griffiths' ability to conjure up thoroughly believable people and to ensure that the myths and legends which steep the story never spill over into woo-woo' Reviewing the Evidence. Another case for DI Nelson and it is not long before the dead body of the museum's owner lies dead in his stables too. She effectively conveys the hurt and complex feelings that can result from unthinking indiscretions and somehow these become integral to the narrative. The mysteries are wonderful and I never manage to work out the solution, but it is really the characters that are the icing on the cake. I love encountering new words and this book presented me with "murmuration," which is defined as "the phenomenon that results when hundreds, sometimes thousands, of starlings fly in swooping, intricately coordinated patterns through the sky.

Forensic archeologist Ruth Galloway stirs up fears and passions among the living even as she unearths Iron Age remains. All the usual characters are here including Nelson and things remain as awkward as ever between him and Ruth. At the same token the reader is plowed into another enticing mystery as a museums curator is found dead next to a coffin excavated from a medieval church. Doctor Ruth Galloway, Head of Forensic Archaeology at the University of North Norfolk, is not thinking about coffins or journalists or even about whether she will encounter DCI Harry Nelson at the Smith Museum. Griffith's novels occupy a world where modern science and new age mysticism coexist but her characters' flights of fancy are leavened by common sense and humanity' Sunday Times.Meanwhile, Cathbad’s covert love affair with married DS Judy Johnson also comes to Ruth's attention for the first time and revelations towards the end of the book indicate fraught times ahead for this couple also. If you work with human remains you get past that phase really quickly; or you never go through it, I never did.
