About this deal

Or will you follow the law, saving millions of people’s lives that you don’t know in exchange of your loyal friend’s existence?

As Arthur continues to unite Britain, it boils with its own identity crisis as Christianity makes even more inroads into paganism.

Merlin asks Derfel to meet him and Nimue late that night on a hilltop, where he has Derfel drink a foul concoction. However, Cerdic insists that Lancelot be given control of this land as a king; as such, Lancelot is granted a new kingdom much richer and more to his liking than Siluria, which will instead be divided between Gwent and Powys. Derfel is smitten by Ceinwyn (sister of Cuneglas, King of Powys) who is in turn promised to Lancelot.

Following a hard-fought victory, Arthur appears to have at last won the unity of the British Kingdoms. Most of the plot in the book focused on Merlin’s hunt for the Cauldron of Clyddno Eiddyn (or in modern names, the Holy Grail), driving back the Saxon, Camelot (Arthur’s glorious years of rule) and eventually, why Arthur earned the title ‘The Enemy of God, all told masterfully from Derfel’s 1st person omniscient-ish narrative. I am wondering if that is because it can be a little boring at times and therefore it never stuck in my head all those years ago.The narrator is amazing and brings so much passion and awesome story telling i have been spell bound through out, the story it’s self is great and I can honestly say one of the best. Lancelot explains that he has negotiated an alliance with Cerdic, which infuriates Arthur, who understands that doing so has negated his victory over Aelle and only made Cerdic into a more dangerous enemy. Enemy of God was completely and utterly a five star rating in my mind and the trilogy is rapidly becoming one of my favourite trilogies of all time whilst already claiming first spot for books which have Arthur as a main concept.

How does God look on it when a believer departs from the red-hot spiritual passion he once possessed and turns his devotion to other things?

Because of Mordred's incompetence in allowing Lancelot and his Christian followers to ravage Dumnonia, Arthur declares Mordred unfit to rule as king, a proclamation recognized by Cuneglas and Merlin. On the night of Ceinwyn and Lancelot's betrothal feast, Derfel breaks the bone and Ceinwyn goes to Derfel instead of Lancelot. Queria ouvir os gritos de uma parede de escudos rompida e o toque das trombetas de guerra enquanto um exército vitorioso perseguia até a ruína um inimigo espalhado. Many books of this length contain pages or even chapters that disengage me from the story as they can be boring, but this book is an exception. According to these words of Jesus, it is impossible for us to give our hearts simultaneously to two masters.

In the second book of the Warlord Chronicles, Bernard Cornwell brilliantly retells the Arthurian legend, combining myth, history and thrilling battlefield action. As for the vacant Silurian throne, Arthur plans to make Lancelot the king and marry him to the Cuneglas' sister, Ceinwyn, the Princess of Powys, thus cementing the alliance between Dumnonia, Powys, and Siluria. As far as I'm aware, apart from the other books in the same series, there is not much to compare Enemy of God to. It’s also refreshing to see Arthur in a light where he’s not always painted as nothing more but a paragon of virtue, as is often the case with his character in most other interpretations throughout different media. Although every chapter is still very long, with 13 chapters out of 470 pages, it never felt like a slog going through it because Cornwell’s prose worked so well for me.
