I wanted a pop of color against the red cushions and I felt like the lumbar pillows were slowly fading into the background of the chairs.

I chose this particular pillow because I thought the high-contrast leaf pattern would be a good test for how well this spray paint actually covers. I have had some luck with brush on fabric paints but for my outdoor cushions I wanted something that would give me a quick update. We are not responsible for the results of your painting project and will not credit for used cans or damaged furniture. If you look closely you can just see the shade sail in this post on globe tealight holders from back in 2018. Well that was the case with this Rustoleum Outdoor Fabric Paint; I was so curious to see just how good it was and now I get to share the results with you guys. This moisture can not only get into fabric cushions and other outdoor fabric from rainfall, but also through drink spillages, causing the fabric to absorb and ultimately hold moisture. If the water absorbs into the fabric and darkens the surface, this is an indicator that it is able to get wet if it was left in rainfall and therefore needs waterproofing if you want to keep them dry.

There are other ways to paint fabric; I’ve previously shared about using chalk paint and wax to paint fabric and it was really cost effective. Exterior fabric can vary widely, with some designed to allow water to travel straight through the material to avoid it becoming saturated with water, while others have very little resistance to moisture. The photo is an ivory fabric we have changed colour, showing how the product has soaked in without changing the look or feel. After the final coat of paint, turn the can of spray paint upside down and spray it for a few seconds until it runs clear. Some people mentioned experiencing stiffness when using the paint and I think over-saturating your cushions with paint may be the cause of that.

This project was inspired by another post somewhere out there on the internet of someone who revived their faded and discolored patio umbrella with regular spray paint and they loved how it turned out. It would be ok if the fabric turned out more stuff because I think it will add to the durability… what do you think?

The fabric may still feel slightly rough, especially if it has a pile, due to the fibres sticking together. When it comes to any exterior surface, whether it be masonry, roof tiles, wood or fabric, water and moisture is its biggest enemy. It is hard to know for sure how much spray paint is left in the can, but it feels like I used around half the can of paint on my small pillow.
