Description

Harper was a wise-cracking Irish stereotype, Dan Hagman was super soldier sniper extraordinaire (literally his own role was to shoot things at a distance) and Teresa was a cold-blooded murderer. Crowbarring him in actually makes the main plot less clear – I have no idea what really developed from it.

In Sharpe’s Command, Sharpe kills Frenchies again, but it is offhandly (and in somewhat unworldly numbers – he’d hardly have achieved a better kill rate if his detachment had been armed with an Bren Gun). He is also the author of THE GRAIL QUEST series, set in the Hundred Years’ War, THE WARLORD chronicles, set in Arthurian Britain, a number of standalone novels, one non-fiction work on Waterloo and the series with which he began, the SHARPE series. Whether writing about Waterloo, Assaye or any of the less celebrated battles that form the backbone of Sharpe’s adventures, Cornwell is rightly celebrated for his historical accuracy and his ability to capture the frenetic chaos of war and bloodshed. The groundbreaking debut novel of Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers, one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary science fiction, is a truly galactic limited edition. Cornwell's strict Protestant upbringing informed the background of A Crowning Mercy, which took place during the English Civil War.But they're rapidly outnumbered, enemies are hiding in plain sight, and as the French edge ever closer to the frontline, time is running out . Folio commissioned Hokyoung Kim for the artwork, while the late author’s wife, Wendy Benchley, provides a fascinating new introduction. And the impossible is exactly what the formidable Captain Sharpe is asked to do when he's sent on an undercover mission to a small village in the Spanish countryside, far behind enemy lines.

Nice to see his murdered wife alive again as Bernard Cornwall fills in gaps in this 23 book narrative. I loved that his wife Teresa was a Partisan commander in her own right, while the small band of riflemen under his command was also filled with interesting characters. If you’ve watched any of the Sharpe TV films then you’ll be familiar with the characters and can even hear their voices as they speak from the page. After several years of Cornwell devoting all his time to all things Uthred, we finally get back to Rifleman Richard Sharpe. And the impossible is exactly what the formidable Major Sharpe is asked to do when he's dispatched on an undercover mission behind enemy lines, deep in the Spanish countryside.

Of course that happens, but its a weird stumble through setpieces, as Sharpe rushes through a series of objectives. I was fairly disappointed, don’t get me wrong the ending helps to make the book a bit more enjoyable but there are far too many inconsistencies in this book.Sharpe was essentially Sean Bean as Sharpe – which is fine for the films, but doesn’t work on print as he’s never been Sean Bean in the book series?
