About this deal

The Picopresso doesn’t require batteries to brew your espresso. Instead, it features a piston, which can be pumped by hand to create 18 bars of pressure to force the hot water through the coffee grounds. It comes with a standard 2-inch / 5.2cm double basket, similar to those found on mains-powered espresso machines. It can hold 18g of coffee, and also features a 2.7fl oz / 80ml water tank, so you can brew a double espresso no matter where you are – as long as you have access to boiling water and a cup. Like behind the bar of the café, I’ve been able to run a wide range of coffees through the Picopresso: different origins, roast profiles, processes, and grind sizes to get a really balanced espresso with nice texture and a complexity that I’ve honestly only tasted in some of my favourite coffee shops.” Then go ahead and fill the water chamber with boiling water, and by leaving a small gap at the top, it's about 70ml of water, and this will get us pretty close to our target espresso yield of 40g out.

Picopresso Brewing Espresso with the Wacaco Picopresso

The tamper has micro grooves and is made from metal, unlike the minipresso or Nanopresso which unclude plastic tampers. I wish they had sent out some prototypes to reviewers so I could learn more before it goes on sale but seems that is not on the cards. So next, grab that WDT tool and swirl it inside the grounds. WDT is short for Weiss distribution technique, and this works to create an even density of grounds in the portafilter and also breaks up any clumps before you tamp. This as well as other styles of distribution promote the even flow of water through the bed of coffee for a balanced extraction of the grounds. The Picopresso provides an enjoyable quality focus process using current tools of the trade to brew a standard Double Espresso. Its clever pump design makes it both super compact and lightweight for an espresso brewer as well as durable enough that it's ready for just about any adventure. Now, you can shop the full range of Wacaco products, including the Wacaco Picopresso. But now let's jump straight in and explore the full potential of this promising brewer. With the Picopresso there are no shortcuts. Each home brewer must master the art of manual espresso making by dialing in the correct grind size, tamping, and perfecting pulling technique – their reward; an authentic cafe-quality espresso that will rival any expensive high-end machine. Product Specification: From here, add the shower screen on top of the filter basket, and then screw the portafilter assembly to the body of the Picopresso, nice and tight.

Wacaco | Picopresso | Pro-level Portable Espresso Machine

Picopresso is the most compact and pro-oriented of our portable espresso machines. This specialty coffee espresso machine features a naked portafilter, so users will see delicious creamy espresso flowing directly from a standard 52mm 18 grams stainless steel filter basket during the brewing process. Also, despite its extra size, the Flair only has the same grind capacity as the Picopresso, so it won’t make larger batches either. When I begin pumping again, the espresso begins flowing naturally from the middle of the basket and a good steady pump every second or so will continue to keep a steady stream of espresso flowing out. Now you could pump faster but it will get harder as the pressure rises in the Picopresso and then there's really no way of knowing what pressure you're brewing at. My guess is that if you do pump too fast, you're kind of getting a pressure profile that's climbing and falling. As long as you keep a steady stream of espresso going out along with the consistent pumping, then you're probably somewhere better in the ballpark of a consistent reasonable pressure. Wacaco suggests you pump boiling water through the espresso maker and into your cup before brewing your espresso; including this step resulted in it taking 90 seconds to brew a shot of espresso. While this may seem long in comparison to powered espresso makers – the Breville Bambino Plus takes just 21 seconds, for example – it's certainly worth the wait. With “Picopresso”, there are no shortcuts. Each user must master the art of manual brewing by dialing in the correct grind size, tamping the ground coffee and perfecting their pulling technique. However, these efforts are ultimately rewarded with an authentic, high-quality espresso that can rival drinks prepared by high-end machines. There’s an EVA hard protective case with a strong zipper and a soft interior. This is perfect if you’re taking your Picopresso outdoors, offering even more protection to an already durable machine. Also in the box is a branded dosing funnel for the basket. Next, there’s an upgraded tamper with a robust steel base. This is a significant improvement on the Nanopresso, whose tamper is the base of a plastic scoop. Lastly, there’s a tiny WDT tool to break up your grinds for a cleaner extraction. The coffee was wonderfully smooth, with an intense flavor. Thanks to the ability to use the portafilter naked, where the spout is removed so the bottom of the basket is exposed, the coffee also had a complete crema on top. When we added sugar and gave the drink a stir, the crema formed again, which is exactly as we’d hoped. When coffee lovers think of manual espresso machines, they often believe they involve too much effort. Thankfully, that doesn’t apply to the Wacaco Picopresso.
